SYNOPSIS
これは、まだ携帯もネットもメールもあたりまえではない頃のお話。オーストラリア・メルボルン在住の8歳の少女メアリーは、シェリー酒中毒で万引きに夢中な母親ベアラと、死んだ鳥で剥製を作るのが趣味の父親ノエルと暮らす空想好きな女の子。ある日メアリーは、アメリカに住む“誰かさん”に手紙を送ろうと思い立つ。分厚い電話帳からひときわ風変わりな名前の“マックス・ホロウィッツさん”を選び出し、さっそく鉛筆を走らせる。一方、アメリカ・ニューヨークで暮らす44歳のマックスは、肥満体の中年男。社会にうまくなじめず、極端に人づきあいを苦手とする彼は、大都会で一人孤独な日々を送っていた。そんな彼のもとに、はるかオーストラリアから1通の手紙が届く――それは、メアリーとマックスの、2つの大陸をまたいだ20年以上に渡る深い交流のはじまりだった・・・・。
This is the story of a time when mobile phones and the internet were not in common use. One day, Mary, an eight-year-old girl who lives in Melbourne, decides to send a letter to someone living in the US. She chooses a person who has the strange name “Max Horowitz.” Max is a 44-year-old man living in New York. He is extremely fat and is not good at communicating with other people at all. One day, a letter arrives for him. This marks the beginning of the relationship between Mary and Max, which lasts more than 20 years across the two continents.

アダム・エリオット ( Adam Elliot )
オーストラリアのメルボルンを拠点とするアダム・エリオットは、元気なエビの養殖業者の息子であり、自分の描く絵や物語を「クレイオグラフィー」――彼の家族友達、知り合いの人生をベースとした、クレイ（粘土）による大人向けのビタースウィートなバイオグラフィー――と名づけている。アダムが用いるのは伝統的なコマ撮りのテクニックだけである。小道具もセットも、クレイやダンボール、ワイヤーや絵具を用いた手作りである。彼の作品はこれまで800を超える映画祭で上映され、100を超える賞を獲っており、そのなかには『ハーヴィー・クランペット』による2004年のアカデミー賞短編アニメーション部門受賞も含まれている。
Based in Melbourne Australia, Adam is the son of an acrobatic prawn farmer. He describes his pictures and animated films as Clayographies; bittersweet adult clay biographies based on his family, friends and acquaintances. He uses only traditional stopmotion and photographic techniques to create his work, and every prop, set and character is hand crafted using clay, cardboard, wire and paint. His films have participated in over 8oo film festivals and accumulated over 100 awards including the 2004 Short Animation Academy Award™ for HARVIE KRUMPET.
