GIFにおける、低解像度、短尺ループという条件で、こうも儚く尊い表現が可能なのか、という驚きがまずあった。イラストレーターの作者だからこそできる、絵画におけるフレームの視点を感じさせることが、大きな受賞理由のひとつである。影表現によって、「枠」そのものの存在を消すことに成功し、鑑賞者と作品の境界を飛び越えて、ひとつの空間を生み出す効果を引き出している。また、リアリズム絵画においては、背景のみならず対象そのものを描写してすべてを描き起こすことが一般的だが、本作は対象を水彩のテクスチャによる止め絵表現に留めている。それでいながら一見すると三枚ループのように見える影素材は、よく見ると枚数の多さに気づき、この贅沢さが作品の落ち着きの効果を生んでいるのだ。
I was first of all surprised that such an ephemeral and delicate expression was possible with the low resolution and short-duration loop of GIF. A huge factor in awarding this prize to this GIF is the perception of frame that it manifests, which is something only an illustrator could achieve. The shadows erase the presence of the “frame” itself and break down the barrier between the viewer and the animation, drawing the viewer into the world of the animation. Realism artwork usually depicts the whole scene, the subject and the background in their entirety, but in this image, the subject with watercolor texture remains still. At first glance, the shadow appears to be a three-layer loop but when you take a closer look, it’s actually many layers, and this diligence creates the image’s calmness. It’s probably not something easy to understand to those who are used to the baroque-style animation of late, but by boldly avoiding the trend and focusing only on transience, it exudes something profound that’s similar to haiku and impressionist paintings that embrace the sense of time and atmosphere.
