アメリカのアニメーション作家クリス・サリバンが2012年に発表した長編『コンシューミング・スピリッツ』は、切り絵、ドローイング、立体を組み合わせ、アメリカ郊外の神話的なリアリティを浮かび上がらせました。アメリカ各地の上映でスマッシュヒットとなり、Time Out NY誌が選出する「史上最高のアニメーション100本」で38位に選出されるなど、きわめて高い評価を受けました。日本でも2014年の初来日で熱狂的なファンを生み出した本作品を、待望のリバイバル上映。
Combining the various techniques of cut-outs, drawings, and model animation, Sullivan’s very first animated feature, Consuming Spirits, tells the story of the mythological reality of the suburbs in America. This film became a smash-hit in theaters in the US and was selected as one of the “100 Best Animated Films.” Here in Japan, the film was selectively shown in various cities and was accepted enthusiastically.
SYNOPSIS
アメリカ郊外の田舎町マグソンに暮らす42歳のジェンシャン・ヴィオレット、38歳のヴィクター・ブルー、64歳のアール・グレイ。当初は関係ないように思えた３人は、不吉な社会福祉施設、里親、ロマンス、憎悪を巻き込み、いつしか悲劇の物語に巻き込まれていく。隠されるべき家族の秘密、明らかにされるべきもの。ある夜の飲酒運転と自動車事故が引き金に、記憶の貯蔵庫が開け放たれ、３人はそれぞれ、癒され、そして傷つく。アメリカの鬼才クリス・サリバンが15年以上の歳月をかけて完成させた２時間超の長編アニメーション。
It took experimental filmmaker Chris Sullivan nearly 15 years to complete Consuming Spirits, a meticulously crafted film shot frame by frame with collage, cutout, pencil drawing, and stop-motion animation. The oddly drawn characters live in Gardener’s Corners, a dark and dysfunctional Appalachian town. Sullivan’s three protagonists—Gentian Violet, a bus-driving journalist; Earl Gray, a radio talk-show host; and Victor Blue, a meek newspaperman—share dark secrets from their pasts as well as their daily lives. A feature length animated psychological drama, created frame by frame and shot on 16mm.

ペンシルベニア州・ピッツバーグ（米国）にある樹木が茂る丘で、10人兄弟姉妹と共に生まれ育つ。35年間に渡りアニメーション作品を製作。初の長編アニメーション作品「コンシューミング・スピリッツ」がニューヨークのフィルム・フォーラム（2012年12月開催）にて華々しいデビューを果たす（公開2週間）。シネファミリー（ロサンゼルス）とジーン・シスケル・フィルム・センター（シカゴ）での公開後、ジョン・サイモン・グッゲンハイム記念財団とロックフェラー財団フィルム・ビデオ・フェローシップからの資金援助を得る。同作品製作後、クリエイティブ・キャピタル・グラント（資金援助）を受け、次の長編作品「ザ・オービット・オブ・マイナー・サテライト」の製作を開始する。

Chris Sullivan was born and raised in the wooded hills of Pittsburgh Pa. along with 10 siblings. Making animated films for 35 years. His first animated feature “Consuming Spirits” had its theatrical debut at New York’s Film Forum for a two week run in December of 2012. Then Cinefamily in LA, Gene Siskel Film Center in Chicago, “Consuming Spirits” received funding from The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation and The Rockefeller Foundation Film and Video Fellowship. Just as “Consuming Spirits” is finally finished, Chris received a Creative Capital Grant to start work on another experimental feature “The Orbit of Minor Satellites.” http://creative-capital.org/projects/view/705 Chris lives in Chicago, teaches at The School of The Art Institute of Chicago, and is a father to Carmen and Silvia Abelson.
