マスタークラス：Yoshi Sodeoka（ビデオアーティスト）「境界なきデジタル時代の先駆者」

30年以上にわたりニューヨークを拠点に活動するアーティスト・Yoshi Sodeoka。その活動範囲は、ビデオアート、デザイン、音楽、NFTアートなど、多岐に及びます。またSodeokaは、インターネット黎明期の1990年代に、最初期のカルチャー系オンラインマガジン「Word Magazine」のアートディレクターを務め、インターネットカルチャーの夜明けを先導しました。本トークプログラムでは、Sodeokaの創作の裏側に迫るとともに、デジタルアート界のフロントランナーは境界なきデジタル時代をいかにしてサバイブしてきたのか、貴重な証言をもとに解き明かしていきます。

ヨシ･ソデオカ（袖岡由英）は、ビデオ、GIF、印刷物、等々、さまざまなメディアやプラットフォームの可能性を探求している。ネオ・サイケデリックなスタイルは、彼の音楽への愛情に由来する。その複雑で、心ゆさぶるビジュアルは、ノイズ、パンク、メタル、等々から影響を受けて開発された。彼の作品では、デジタルビデオ・フィードバック、映像素材サンプル、オンラインイメージが使用されている。そして、彼のビデオ作品のオーディオ＝サウンドスケープは、多くの場合、ほかのアーティストとの情熱的な共同作業によって生みだされている。

音楽（Psychic TV、Tame Impala、Oneohtrix Point Never、Yeasayer、Beck、The Presets、Max Cooper）、エディトリアル・イラストレーション（New York Times、Wired Magazine、The Atlantic、M.I.T Technology Review）、ファッション（Sandro Paris、Wad Magazine、Adidas、Nike）、広告（Apple、Samsung）、等々、幅広い芸術領域にわたるキャリアを築いている。また、2013年には、国際的に著名なビデオアーティストの作品を流通させるレーベル・Undervolt & Coを立ちあげた。ソデオカの作品は、ポンピドゥー・センター、テート・ブリテン、クリーブランド美術館、ダイチ・プロジェクト、ゲテ・リリック、ミュージアム・オブ・ムービング・イメージ、ボルチモア美術館、ラフォーレミュージアム原宿、等々、多くの国々で展示・上映されてきた。また、彼の作品は、ホイットニー美術館、ミュージアム・オブ・ムービング・イメージ、サンフランシスコ近代美術館に永久収蔵されている。

Yoshi Sodeoka explores a multitude of media and platforms which comprises video, gifs, and print. His neo-psychedelic style stems from his love of and background in music. Noise, punk, and metal all influenced his development of complex, mind-altering visuals. His practice involved using digital video feedback, footage samples, and online imagery, and his videos’ audio soundscapes are often the result of intense collaborative work. Building an all-encompassing career, he reached many artistic fields including fine art, music (Psychic TV, Tame Impala, Oneohtrix Point Never, Yeasayer, Beck, The Presets, Max Cooper), editorial illustration (New York Times, Wired Magazine, The Atlantic, M.I.T Technology Review) fashion (Sandro Paris, Wad Magazine, Adidas, Nike), and advertising (Apple, Samsung). In 2013, he also initiated Undervolt & Co, a label to distribute the work of internationally-renown video artists.

Sodeoka’s work has been exhibited internationally, including at Centre Pompidou, Tate Britain, the Museum of Modern Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art, Deitch Projects, La Gaîté Lyrique, the Museum of Moving Image, the Baltimore Museum of Art, and Laforet Museum Harajuku. His artworks are in the permanent collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of the Moving Image, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
